Deputy Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Buckinghamshire New University
Julia’s educational and research profile spans over 20 years, demonstrating a commitment to the development of academic nursing, ensuring the delivery of knowledge in a meaningful way. Julia is currently a Senior Lecturer and Academic Lead for Nursing Research, where through research and educational innovation, a caring and compassionate undergraduate nurse, can be prepared for qualified practice.
Julia’s main area of clinical interests lies within colo-rectal nursing. Having worked as a specialist and lead nurse for many years, Julia now makes a contribution to research with a focus on understanding patient experiences within this specialist field. Julia's recent doctoral studies sought to define knowledge and skills translation within specialist nursing practice.
Using a qualitative approach, this work identified the possession of specialist knowledge and skills, but a lack of emotional intelligence, in order to translate it in a manner comprehensible to the patient. Julia is currently a Module Leader for three research modules within the nursing programmes, at level 5, 6 and 7 offered at Bucks New University. These modules introduce students to approaches in research, enabling them to demonstrate critical thinking and an understanding of the research process. Julia’s role also includes dissertation supervision for both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students.
She currently undertakes activities within the University: Chair of Research Forum for the School of Nursing and Allied Health and a Panel member for the Ethic committee. Julia is also an External examiner for University of Hull, Consultant Editor for Gastrointestinal Nursing Journal (GIN) and an Editorial board member for British Journal of Nursing (BJN).
